Psychiatry

Psychiatry is the medical specialty focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. Unlike psychology, which is non-medical, psychiatrists are physicians (MD/DO) who can prescribe medications and often work at the intersection of neurology, pharmacology, and psychotherapy.

Psychiatry covers a wide range of disorders — from depression and schizophrenia to addiction and personality disorders — and emphasizes a biopsychosocial approach.
